The Historic Nauvoo Visitors Center is the appropriate starting point for your visit. It is located at the northeast corner of Main and Young Streets. Two 20 minute films, "Remembering Nauvoo", a 20 minute film, and "Joseph Smith, The Prophet of the Restoration", a 70 minute film, are featured, as well as a self guided tour of exhibits that are easily accessible. A walk through the beautiful and inspiring Monument to Women garden, honoring women of the past, present and future, is a highlight.
The Temple is the prominent building in this small town. It is beautiful and inspiring. Plan to spend time on the grounds enjoying a wonderful spirit that pervades that area. If you are planning to spend a few extra days here, other interesting sites could be Pioneer Saints Cemetery, Quarry Overlook, Exodus Memorial, Trail of Hope, Temple Visitors Center and Carthage Jail. Although Carthage is approximately 24 miles, it is an easy drive. Like the reconstructed Nauvoo Temple, it has deep meaning and will be well worth your time. The story of the events that took place is beautifully told with a film and tour leaders. Should you be visiting over a weekend and would like to attend worship services, Sacrament Meeting begins for the full-time missionaries and visitors at 8:00 am and concludes at 9:30. This meeting is held in the Nauvoo Chapel about one block East of the Visitors Center. We hope you will enjoy your visit to Nauvoo and if you need further information or wish to talk directly to someone, please call us toll-free at 888-453-6434. We look forward to your visit. |
